Banking, Factoring, and Advances: Financial Services for Trucking Companies

Authored by Richard McKellar•Founder, My Commercial Funding

The term financial services means nothing until you know which problem you are trying to solve. A trucking company has roughly three, and they are not interchangeable.

Factoring solves the invoice timing problem

You delivered the load. An invoice is outstanding with net-30 or net-45 terms. Factoring sells that invoice to a lender at a discount for cash today.

The cost is real, usually a percentage of the invoice, and you give up some margin for speed. The benefit is that payroll and fuel stop depending on your customer's payment department.

A line of credit solves the recurring gap

A revolving facility draws when you need it and repays when freight pays. Cheaper than factoring per dollar, harder to qualify for, and it works best when the gap is predictable rather than a one-time event.

An advance solves the urgent problem

A merchant cash advance or revenue-based product moves on speed. Underwriting looks at bank deposits rather than tax returns, which matters when your credit does not tell the story your revenue does.

The cost is the highest of the three. So the discipline is using it for a defined, short, expensive problem rather than for working capital in general.

Which one actually fits

If the gap is one large invoice, factor it. If the gap recurs every month at the same scale, a line of credit is the right instrument. If money is needed this week for something that cannot wait, an advance does that job.

Mixing them up is how trucking companies end up paying three sets of fees for one cash-flow problem.

The Diesel Stimulus Package from Giggle Finance covers the urgent tier up to $15,000 with no minimum credit score. Larger or recurring needs: get a quote or call (888) 562-1119.
